Makfi To Stand At Tweenhills In 2011
| 2nd September 2010
|
MAKFI, the winner of the 2,000 Guineas (Gr.1) and Prix Jacques le Marois (Gr.1), will stand at Tweenhills in 2011.
An agreement was reached with his owner Mathieu Offenstadt and partners to sell Makfi to clients of David Redvers Bloodstock. The transfer of ownership will take place after the Breeders' Cup Mile, Makfi's ultimate goal.
David Redvers said: "It is a dream come true to agree a deal to acquire a horse of MAKFI's calibre. Few other racehorses retire with such credentials as a sire - he has it all. He ticks every box. To have him to stand at Tweenhills, in England is a massive boost when he could have so easily been lost from Europe and I am incredibly grateful to my clients the Al Thani family for investing so seriously in our Industry at a time when shrewd investment is so badly required.
"He has comprehensively outclassed the best milers of a generation on good to firm and soft ground and has nothing left to prove having beaten Goldikova, Canford Cliffs, Paco Boy, Dick Turpin et al. However add to this; a marvellous temperament, electric acceleration, majestic pedigree, stunning conformation, physique and with his sire DUBAWI on fire, you have the complete package.
"My clients and I are thrilled to be involved with Makfi and to be part of the ongoing fairytale so beautifully crafted by Mikel Delzangles and his team."
Makfi is out of the GREEN DESERT mare DHELAAL, who is a half-sister to the European Champion Two-Year-Old and sire ALHAARTH and to the Prix du Calvados winner Green Pola. The family also includes the Gr.1 winners and sires Green Dancer, Okawango and Authorized.

Tribute To Lucky Story With Primo Lady Stakes Win
| 14th May 2010
|
A tribute was made today to LUCKY STORY, who was tragically found dead in his paddock this week, when his daughter PRIMO LADY won the Marygate Fillies' Stakes (L) at York in impressive fashion. She was Lucky Story's seventh black-type horse.
A post-mortem examination carried out on Lucky Story showed that this son of Kris S died of a heart attack.
David Redvers said: "He was only a young horse and a very healthy horse. He never gave us any reason to be worried about his health, so it was completely out of the blue."

Lucky Story Found Dead In Paddock
| 12th May 2010
|
LUCKY STORY, the nine-year-old sire of Royal Ascot Group 1 winner Art Connoisseur, was found dead this morning in his paddock at Tweenhills Stud.
Tweenhills Stud director David Redvers said: “We found Lucky Story dead this morning after what would appear sudden death in his sleep. Thankfully there was no sign whatsoever that he had suffered.”
News of the stallion’s death comes as another blow to Redvers and his staff following the loss last year of Ishiguru (Danzig), who was put down in September following complications arising from a knee injury.
Lucky Story, who was bred in the USA by Winstar Farms and sired by Kris S, was a full brother to high-class racehorse and sire Dr Fong. Standing under the Darley banner he took up stud duties at Tweenhills in 2005 following a successful racing career in the colours of Abdulla Buhaleeba.
From the stables of Middleham-based Mark Johnston he won four of nine races, including Goodwood’s Gr.2 Vintage Stakes and Doncaster’s Gr.2 Champagne Stakes as a two-year-old, and although failing to score at three he finished second in Ascot’s Gr.1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, beaten half a length by Rakti.
His stud career got away to an impressive start when the Michael Bell-trained Art Connoisseur won Royal Ascot’s Gr.2 Coventry Stakes, a victory that helped Lucky Story become the leading first-season sire based in Britain. Art Connoisseur gilded his sire’s fledgling career last season when returning to Royal Ascot and winning the Gr.1 Golden Jubilee Stakes.
Other good offspring by Lucky Story include Listed winner Lucky Like and Listed-placed Caranbola, Hartley and Letizia Relco.
Redvers added: “Having lost Ishiguru last summer to a freak paddock accident this is a double blow to us, especially as Lucky Story was such a lovely horse. He provided us with our first Group 1 winner in Art Connoisseur and was champion British-based first-season sire.
“I am sorry for Darley for whom we stood Lucky Story and who lose such an exciting young sire, but I am particularly sad for the team here who were so fond of the horse. This now leaves a huge hole in our stallion roster and I can assure our clients we will do our utmost to find a replacement in the near future.”

| 30th March 2010
|
The LUCKY STORY filly, PRIMO LADY, won the first £10,000 Racing Post Yearling Bonus when landing the Bluesquare.com Maiden Auction Fillies' Stakes at Lingfield yesterday.
It was very fitting that a two-year-old by Lucky Story should win the first bonus as David Redvers was a key driver behind setting up the initiative and is a committee member.
Trainer Gay Kelleway and the owners of Primo Lady (Kevin Jarvis, Gary Hodson and Peter Moule) were understandably delighted to win the bonus and plan to buy another eligible horse with the money.

Here Come The Indians!
| 25th March 2010
|
The Flat season is upon us and much anticipation awaits the first runners by Tweenhills’ first-season sire Sleeping Indian. Time will tell whether they have inherited the class of this multiple Group winner by Indian Ridge, but if trainers’ reports are anything to go by the future looks bright.
Kevin Ryan purchased yet another two-year-old by Sleeping Indian at the Goffs Kempton Breeze-Up Sale, Lot 3, a colt out of the three time winning mare Aimee’s Delight. Kevin said of his other two: “They have great temperaments and are really sharp precocious two-year-olds that I like a lot.”
Another trainer extolling their virtues is Richard Hannon Jnr, who commented: “We have got two crackers by Sleeping Indian. One very precocious and sure to win early, and the other owned by Thurloe who is all quality and could be anything.”
Roll on the 2010 Flat season!

Radiohead On Right Wavelength In Us
| 1st March 2010
|
The Tweenhills bred and raised, RADIOHEAD, made an impressive debut for new trainer Rick Dutrow in Florida at the weekend.
The Norfolk Stakes (Gr.2) winner at Royal Ascot, took a 1m allowance race on the dirt at Gulfstream Park by three and half lengths. In doing so, he beat his stable companion Homeboykris, a Grade 1 winner last season.
When trained in the UK by Brian Meehan, Radiohead also finished second in the Shadwell Middle Park Stakes (Gr.1) and was third in the Nunthorpe Stakes (Gr.1) at York.
This colt was bred at Tweenhills by Redmyre Bloodstock and Stephen Hillen out of their mare Security Interest, whom Stephen purchased for Tweenhills for just $20,000 with Radiohead in-utero. Trade Fair To Remain In Australia
| 14th January 2010
|
TRADE FAIR, who has stood for the past four years at Tweenhills has been sold to remain in Australia, where he has been shuttling for the Southern Hemisphere season and his first crop have made a big impression.
The son of Zafonic is also responsible for the 2010 European Classic prospect FAIR TRADE, trained by David Elsworth, but his Northern Hemisphere shareholders have decided to accept an offer to sell him to Ted Van Heemst’s Lynward Park Stud in Western Australia.
Trade Fair was sold in a deal handled by David Redvers Bloodstock and John Chalmers Bloodstock.
David Redvers commented: “Although I am very sorry that Trade Fair is not returning this season, we have managed to secure an excellent deal for his Northern Hemisphere shareholders and we also have an agreement from the new owners that we can lease the horse back next year should there be a demand for his services.
“He has made a bright start in Western Australia with his first runners and ABSOLUTE PLEASURE, who won first time out at Ascot, Perth, looks an exciting prospect. However, although he has had plenty of winners here and has the hugely promising David Elsworth-trained runner, Fair Trade, to look forward to, he failed to produce a stakes winner with his first two-year-old crop and that was going to make promoting him very difficult this season. At the end of the day, we were made an excellent offer and it was in his shareholders’ best interests to accept.”
Tweenhills Farm and Stud is home to two highly-promising young stallions in 2010 in LUCKY STORY, sire of the Group 1 winner Art Connoisseur, and SLEEPING INDIAN, whose well-received first crop of two-year-olds will run this season.
|

Ferneley Continues To Fly The Flag For His Late Sire Ishiguru
| 21st September 2009
|
FERNELEY continued to fly the flag in style for his late sire Ishiguru, when finishing second by just a length in the Woodbine Mile (Gr.1) at Woodbine yesterday.
Proving yet again that Ishiguru’s greatest asset was in producing tough, sound horses who improved with age. This five-year-old son was following up his win in the Del Mar Handicap (Gr.2) in the USA, while another five-year-old, She’s Our Mark, has won two Gr.3 races, two Listed races, and been placed numerous times in other Stakes races.
All of which makes it even more tragic to lose such a sire here at Tweenhills.
|

Ishiguru Put Down
| 18th September 2009
|
Ishiguru, an emerging force among British-based stallions, was put down today at the age of 11 following complications arising from a knee injury.
Tweenhills Stud director David Redvers said: “We are inconsolable at the loss of a fantastic horse. He had a wonderful temperament ,and after a tremendous amount of hard work his progeny were beginning to establish results that made him such an asset to mare owners, both here and in New Zealand, where he stood during the southern hemisphere season.
“This yearling crop is the best he has produced and he had achieved some excellent recent results at the races. Recent bookings to him from mare owners suggested the best was to come, at the sales and races.
“Veterinary treatment to the knee injury he suffered earlier in the year had been successful, and while he was unable to travel to New Zealand this summer, we were confident he would be ready for the British covering season. Sadly it appears he damaged the knee again, probably when rolling in his box, and on veterinary advice we had to accept the inevitable.
“My sense of tragic loss is shared by Tweenhills’ stallion man Graham McCourt, stud groom Roisin Close and Julie May, who were devoted to Ishiguru. My thoughts also go to Chris and Mark Campin at Chequers Stud in New Zealand for whom the horse had just struck gold – this is just as tough for them.”
A son of champion sire Danzig and the dual Grade 1-winning mare Strategic Maneuver, Ishiguru was bred in America by Betty Moran’s Brushwood Stable and was bought as a yearling for $1,150,000 by Demi O’Byrne. He raced from Aidan O’Brien’s stable in the colours of Sue Magnier, and won three times, notably in the Group 3 Flying Five Stakes.
It was a feather in the cap for Tweenhills Stud to stand such a regally-bred horse, and he soon rewarded that faith by siring Hellvelyn, winner of Royal Ascot’s Group 2 Coventry Stakes and runner up in the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes.
Yet Ishiguru’s greatest asset seemed to be in producing tough, sound horses who improved with age. His five-year-old son Ferneley won the Grade 2 Del Mar Handicap in the USA two weeks ago, while another five-year-old, She’s Our Mark, a 3,500gns foal, on Saturday took her career earnings past £273,000 when third in Ireland’s Group 2 Blandford Stakes.

| 6th January 2009
|
Tweenhills stud groom, ROISIN CLOSE, was a deserving winner of the TBA Annual Stud Staff Award today, sponsored by New England Stud.
Roisin has been with the stud for 10 years, during which time it has expanded significantly. She started out looking after Tweenhills’ stallions and helping with sales preparation but after only a year in the job was appointed stud groom as a reward for her selfless dedication.
Redvers continued: "Roisin thoroughly deserves this recognition. She came originally to do the stallions and has continued to progress and take control. She eats, breathes and sleeps the job and is a vital cog in the operation."
Roisin's award was one of two TBA awards received by Tweenhills in London today, as sire LUCKY STORY received the award for leading British-based first season sire (see news below).

Lucky Story Wins T B A Award For Leading First Season Sire
| 6th January 2009
|
LUCKY STORY was awarded the Tattersalls Silver Salver at the annual TBA Awards today as the leading British-based first season Flat sire in 2008.
He achieved six individual winners of 10 races and total prize money of £165,419. His best performer was the Michael Bell-trained Art Connoisseur, successful in the Gr.2 Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot and runner-up in the Gr.1 Phoenix Stakes.
Lucky Story stands at Tweenhills Farm & Stud on behalf of Darley. Another sire at Tweenhills, Ishiguru went close to winning this award in 2006 after Hellvelyn also won the Coventry Stakes and was second in the Phoenix Stakes. Trade Fair and Sleeping Indian make up the stud’s stallion quartet.
Redvers said: "I’m thrilled because it is a hard job competing with higher profile, more expensive stallions so it is great for a small value horse to come through.
"He has a reasonable bunch of two-year-olds from this year and a couple of yearlings that I have bought for clients, so I would think he should build on what he has done and it is very exciting.
"He was every bit as good a racehorse as his brother Dr Fong - rated exactly the same - and he stands at half the price. In my opinion, he is a better colour and has a great temperament, so there is no reason why he should not end up standing for more than he is at the moment."

Making our stallions affordable whilst keeping a close eye on quality control and giving our stallions the best possible chance to flourish continue to be our priorities.
ISHIGURU - £3,500

| 7th August 2008
|
"... a stallion of considerable potential..." are the words quoted in the Racing Post today about LUCKY STORY. This exciting first-crop sire proved the point yet again today with Stakes filly CARANBOLA winning the EBF Novice Fillies' Stakes at Haydock.
A model of consistency, CARANBOLA, is holding her form well and she is likely to take her chances in the Roses Stakes at York's Ebor meeting for trainer and owner Mel Brittain, who says the champion two-year-old race at Ripon is another option for this filly.
LUCKY STORY currently ranks fourth in the leading first-crops sires in Europe table in order of prize money won.
The Racing Post was full of praise saying: "Lucky Story's earnings have been boosted considerably by Coventry Stakes winner Art Connoisseur, but to sire such a talented colt in a crop of just 53 from a fee of £4,000 marks the brother of Dr Fong as a stallion of considerable potential. With Listed-placed Caranbola also to his credit, the early indications are that he is capable of building upon his initial success."

Gr.1 Second For Lucky Story
| 28th July 2008
|
ART CONNOISSEUR finished a credible second to the Ballydole team's Master Craftsmen in the Phoenix Stakes (Gr.1) yesterday, the best two-year-old race of the season so far.
By Tweenhills-based sire LUCKY STORY, his trainer Michael Bell claimed the ground was a contributory factor in his defeat as he was unable to show the devastating turn of foot that he showed at Royal Ascot.
Art Connoissuer may have lost his unbeaten record and position as the leading two-year-old of the season but is still very much a class colt to follow.

All Set For A Double Celebration!
| 16th June 2008
|
Staff at Tweenhills Farm & Stud are set to have a double celebration this Monday evening.
The stud is sponsoring the Warwickshire Oaks at Warwick Racecourse for the third year running and it is also the venue for stud staff’s end-of-season outing.
"The race sponsorship at Warwick is in recognition of all the hard work put in by the staff at Tweenhills during the busy season, without whom the stud’s rapid progress and success would not have been impossible," said David Redvers, stud manager.
One filly expected to run in the Oaks is Velma Kelly, trained by Walter Swinburn and winner of her only start. This filly will be of special interest to the stud staff, as she is in-foal to Tweenhills stallion Ishiguru. It would be great if Velma Kelly could come home first again - a perfect end to the Tweenhills staff party!
Already today Tweenhills long standing stallion and old favourite, FRAAM, had yet another winner when SLIP comfortably won the Apprentice Handicap at Salisbury on this three-year-old debut. This colt was fourth behind Oaks winner Look Here and Derby fourth Doctor Fremantle as a two-year-old last October so is sure to find more winning opportunities.

Trinbute To Chris Deuters
| 17th March 2008
|
It is with great sadness that I learned of Chris Deuters' untimely death last week. Whilst his selfless and enthusiastic contribution through his work for the ROA was an example to all who enjoy our sport, his support of my fledgling business is something for which I will always be grateful.
Chris and Antonia threw themselves into Racing with enormous enthusiasm on their retirement from the City and generously agreed to give me my first 'break' as a bloodstock agent. Having spent a few years assisting Mark Johnston at the sales I was desperate to get started buying yearlings in my own right and I suggested out of the blue to Chris that he might allow me to buy them a yearling.
To my joy and amazement he agreed and the filly I bought them was Strange Destiny who went on to win the listed St Hugh's Stakes. The following season Chris gave me an order to buy two more and they went on to win the two nurseries at Glorious Goodwood which happened to be his favourite meeting. Chris and Antonia also invested in stallions and broodmares at Tweenhills in generous support of a young business.
In life's journey few people make a real difference to the route you take, but Chris was one of those to whom I can be genuinely grateful. Certainly, racing will be much poorer for his passing for here surely was a man who put back much more than he took out.

| 28th August 2007
|
HELLVELYN notched up another Stakes success for his sire ISHIGURU when winning the Listed Beverley Bullet Sprint Stakes over 5f on 25th August.
It was a great result for last year's Coventry Stakes winner, who was sidelined for the first half of the season with a bruised foot and pulled muscle, and in the circumstances ran a creditable eighth in the Group 1 July Cup. Trainer Bryan Smart reckons the horse will be better again next year when he expects to see him competing for all the top sprint honours. His next immediate target will be the Group 1 Betfred Sprint Cup at Haydock.
Bred by NE and Mrs Poole and Trickledown Stud out of their mare Cumbrian Melody, this colt was sold to Bryan Smart for 100,000gns at the Doncaster St Leger Yearling Sales.
NOMOREBLONDES scored another recent win for her sire ISHIGURU when taking home the 5f handicap at Newcastle today. She is clearly on the upgrade scoring for the second time in a row.
Both wins will help ensure ISHIGURU maintains his position at the top of the table for British-based sires and second-crop sires in Europe with a phenomenal 48% winners to runners (as at 24th August, minimum of 30 runners, statistics provided by Hyperion Promotions).

|
Tweenhills Stallion Ishiguru - Leading British-based Sire
| 10th August 2007
|
A phenomenal run of eight winners in 13 days by Ishiguru progeny in July ensured his position at the top of the league table for British-based sires in order of percentage of winners to runners. Ahead of other top sires such as Dansili, Rainbow Quest, Pivotal and Green Desert.
This Tweenhills stallion also rates 7th out of all sires standing in Europe.
With an incredible 45.45% winners to runners, Ishiguru is way ahead of other notable second-crop sires in Europe such as Sakhee (40%), Rock of Gibraltar (33%), Invincible Spirit (32%), Kyllachy (31%) and Val Royal (27%).
Add to that his Stakes performers, Hellvelyn, Ferneley, and She's Our Mark, who was recently second again in a Stakes race, Ishiguru is shaping into a top quality proven sire. Not bad for a sire who stood at only £4,500 this season.
Statistics based on results received to 7th August 2007 and a minimum of 30 runners, as provided by Hyperion Promotions.
|

The two-year-old colt, THE REAL GURU, ran on well to comfortably take the 5f Maiden at Pontefract and should progress to better things for owner/ breeders Adrian and Alison Parry. The first foal out of Aloma's Reality who ran twice and whose dam's progeny did not score on the racetrack The Real Guru is further proof of Ishiguru's ability to upgrade his mares.
The second winner, COPPER KING, bounced back to winning form in style when easily taking the 7f Claiming Stakes at Carlisle.

However, he did run the best of the overseas runners and can add more names to the impressive list of Group 1 winners he has now beaten. These include Araafa, Aussie Rules, Ad Valorem, Gorella and Librettist. Contact us for a DVD of his outstanding race performances.

After finishing a good fifth in last season's Group 1 Sussex Stakes at Goodwood, he impressively won the Hungerford Stakes at Newbury, which was upgraded to Group 2 status this year after Sleeping Indian's victory when he beat a high-class field including Majors Cast, multiple Group-1 winner Attraction and Nayyir.

At the end of the 2005 season, he was rated 122 by Timeform, who described him as a "strong, good-topped colt and a very smart performer."

Another yearling by a Tweenhills stallion topped one of the day's of the DBS Doncaster St Leger Yearling Sale, when an Ishiguru first-season colt fetched 100,000gns yesterday.
He was bought for Sheikh Rashid (Sheikh Mohammed's son) by trainer Bryan Smart, who said:"I fell in love with the horse when I saw him. He was just gorgeous and a beautiful mover."
His dam is Cumbrian Melody, a winning daughter of Petong and the producer of six winners. An imposing yearling, he had been purchased by Mags O'Toole for Lynn Lodge Stud for 32,000gns as a foal. A great return on Ishiguru's stud fee at the time of only £3,000.
